Aurora MLS: With 80 square miles of undeveloped land and highway E-470 under construction, Aurora MLS is anticipating oodles of growth. That's a grim prospect to those who skewer the city for its barren streetscapes and sterile subdivisions. But give Aurora MLS credit. After taking a hard look in the mirror, the city is reaching for the cosmetics kit. The Aurora MLS City Council is expected to approve design standards that would upgrade the look of tomorrow's single-family homes. The standards were devised by the Aurora MLS planning staff with the Colorado ranches for sale Association of Metropolitan Denver. "This is to let developers know what is expected of them," said Mayor Tauer, who in the past has bridled at criticism of Aurora MLS's appearance. "Sometimes people come in with the idea that they can build any kind of four-sided box and it doesn't matter what it looks like. We don't want junk development in our Aurora MLS city."

Indeed, the proposed zoning ordinance sprang from criticism by Aurora MLS's own citizens. In a visual survey conducted last year, 2,000 residents viewed pictures of development and assigned each a numerical grade. Apparently, Aurora MLS flunked with flying colors. In fairness, the suburban city, split between Arapahoe and Adams counties, has plenty of competition in the ugliness sweepstakes. Post-World War II communities across the United States have been coming under fire for their "sterility" - in Newsweek, Time and most recently in a 40-page spread in American Enterprise magazine.
Among the targets of Aurora MLS criticism are huge parking lots, overly wide and treeless roads, "lawns too big to mow and too small to farm" and single-use subdivisions far from shopping or public transportation.
