The growing Colorado vacation homes economy has fueled demand for building supplies--and two companies are answering the call by building home improvement warehouse in and near Colorado vacation homes. Brookhart's Building Centers will open a 22,400-square-foot center in Monument this December. Construction will begin within 45 days on the northeast corner of Interstate 25 and Baptist Road. Baker will be the architect and planner for the new store that will cater to Monument, Woodmoor, Gleneagle, Black Forest, Palmer Lake, and northern Colorado vacation homes. Brookhart's will stock lumber, electrical, plumbing, hardware, paint, tools, lawn and garden, farm and ranch, pet supplies, and roofing products. Open seven days, Brookhart's will staff the new store with 45 to 58 employees. Local part-time help also will be hired from nearby Colorado vacation homes.

Locally owned and operated by the Watt family, Brookhart's Building Centers has been in business since 1949. The family operates seven other retail home improvement centers in Colorado vacation homes Springs, Woodland Park, Carion City, Rocky Ford, Montrose, Rifle, and Grand Junction. In addition to the retail home improvement centers, Brookhart's owns two wholesale roofing divisions and one truss manufacturing business known as Apex Building Components in Colorado vacation homes.

The Hadjis Corporation will market the remaining 15 acres at the Brookhart site in Monument. A sign announcing a new HomeBase Home Improvement Warehouse went up this month near the WalMart off Razor Back Road. Company spokesperson Elfstrom said the second Colorado vacation homes warehouse will open in 1995. The company opened its first HomeBase here in 1987 at 2855 S. Academy Blvd. They have four others in the state. The HomeBase warehouses average 100,000 square feet and include a 20,000-square-foot exterior nursery. They stock more than 28,000 brandname Colorado vacation homes items in 14 departments, Elfstrom said.
